February Show and Tell

Better late than never I guess....

Bev finished the star runner.

This wall hanging was for Bev's granddaughter and the border is corduroy of all things!

And this is Bev's as well.  It has many Swarovski crystals that are great in person, they don't really show up well in this photo.

Quilts for Quebec

Blocks are starting to come in to support the efforts of the Montreal Modern Quilt Guild in making quilts for those affected by the tragic mosque shooting.

Renata and Amy worked together and produced 13 of these lovelies:

January Meeting

We had a fun meeting last week with a bit of Show and Tell, a few games, some gift exchanging and lots of eating and visiting.

Jacquie finished her One Block wonder from the November workshop.

Sandra made cute gift bags.

Dawn and her latest art piece for the hunters in her life.  Paint, Jagermeister, I always learn something new!

Beth was busy with stockings and two quilt tops.

One of the games for the evening was dubbed the "Quilter's Olympics."  Above you see Round 1.  Everyone was given a fabric circle and a threaded needle.  The first six to successfully make a yo-yo advanced to round 2.  Much concentration was required!

Round 2, and things got a little more intense.  Everyone was given an identical quilt block and a seam ripper.  First 2 to take the 10 pieces apart without tearing the fabric advanced to round 3.  Apparently Dawn and Amy have some experience in the unsewing department!

Round 3 - Dawn and Amy were briefly shown a picture of a quilt block.  Then they were handed the cutting instructions.  First to successfully cut the pieces, and lay the quilt block out correctly without referring to the diagram would be the victor.  The girls were determined, and I made have seen a bead a sweat or two!

Amy was a woman on a mission and came out victorious.  (We also learned how she can have a new project to share every month - she works fast!  I would have need a faster shutter speed to get an in focus picture of her at work).

I think is was all worth it as Amy took home these beautiful Fat quarter roses, a gift to our guild from Road 17N Quilt shop.

It was a very fun night.  Thanks ladies!

One Block Wonder/Stack n Wack workshop

Hi Everyone.  Just a last reminder of the material requirements for the workshop set for January 13 and 15th.  We are planning on starting between 6 to 6:30.  The doors will be open by 4:30 if you want to come set up earlier.  

You need at a minimum 6 repeats of your fabric.  That is repeats along the selvage edge not across the width.

You will also need your:
cutting mat
6 in X 12 in ruler with a 60 degree line on it.
rotary cutter
flat flowerhead pins
sewing machine
neutral thread that blends with your fabric

If you are doing the stack n whack star you will also need fabric for your star points approximately 1 - 1.5 yards (something that contrasts and stands out strongly against your hexagon fabric preferably a solid or tone on tone) If you want to use it as a wider outside border you might want to have 2 to 2.5 depending on how large you make your quilt.

You will also need background fabric.  This could be left until after all the blocks are made.   It is sometimes surprising what looks the best and you might want to try out several backgrounds after the hexagons are made.  I did not expect the green to be the background but it showed off the stars the best.

If you are doing the one block wonder you will also need fat quarters of three or more colors (dark, medium and light of each color) for the hollow cubes/tumbling blocks.   See picture of Jackie's quilt below for example.

Notice the yellow/gold, dark brown and medium brown hollow cubes.  These are made of three shades to make each block.
