MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL -Summertime Quilt Challenge

Beauty is a thing seldom seen. It is held by all, within the soul it lies, waiting to come out to the surface, but it can only be found if someone is sharing their soul.  Beauty is suppressed by the evils of the world. Only love can bring beauty out. Once seen, beauty never hides again. Not even hatred can deny beauty of it's true design. Beauty, although possessed by all; few and fewer yet will ever see one of the most beautiful sights - the beauty held by you.

Deadline:  September 25, 2013

This challenge is open to Crocus Quilt Guild Members.  If you are not a member please contact Dawn Piasta for participation details.  Email: dawnpiasta@gmail.com,

Challenge:  Create and submit a quilt that when finished is between 18” and 24” square.  Include a 4” sleeve for hanging and a label with your name, date, and title on the back.  Use only fabric items that are, no longer useful or “beautiful” to your eyes.  Use only textile products. Use whatever technique you would choose. Simplicity, resourcefulness, texture and colour will guide you along the way.

Gather these items from various locations such as:

Garage sale shirts or men’s ties

Dress from Salvation Army

Skirt  from Value Village

Blouse that is in your clothes rag pile from home

June Meeting Highlights

Here is a little look at what we saw at our last meeting before a summer break.  Don't forget to turn in your quilt show forms before the end of July so that the hanging committee can get organized for the upcoming show!

There were seven versions of our mystery quilt project in various stages of completion to view.

Karen's in blue and grey with a zig-zag layout.

 Mona's elegant black and grey.

Marion is finishing hers as a "quilt as you go" project with different flowers quilted in each of the open areas.

Bev's striking brown and orange combination.  I can't wait to see the whole thing!

Cheri's original layout, in beautiful batiks.

And Lori's modern pink and grey version.

If anyone else has theirs finished but couldn't attend the meeting, please drop me an email as I have a little gift for you.  I know I owe one to Jackie!  Who else is out there?

Bev also showed her butterfly quilt for her granddaughter.  Yes that is a 54" circle she pieced into the background!

And I finally finished this wall hanging.

A little over three months until our quilt show so happy summer quilting!

Challenge Quilts 2013

Each year the Crocus Quilter's Guild holds a challenge amongst its members.  We each start out with the same 18" x 22" pieces of three different fabrics.  The challenge is to make a quilted item using a portion of these three fabrics and as many others if you wish, to complete the project of your choice.

We have 7 months in which to complete the challenge and the first meeting in May is when they are due back.  They are then viewed by the membership and voted on.  The project receiving the most votes wins "Viewer's Choice" and a prize.

This is meant to be a fun challenge and participation is voluntary.  It is totally amazing to see the imaginative differences and creativity when everyone started out with the same fabrics.

Crocus Quilters Spring Wind-up

On Thursday, June 6, the Crocus Quilter's welcomed quilters from Ste. Rose, Roblin, Gilbert Plains, Grand View, Morden & Swan River.

The evening started with a wonderful shopping spree that included vendors from Quilter's Den, Morden & Fabriculous, Swan River.  We are so happy that Alvina and Wendy could join us.  Without them we would not have the tools we need to enjoy our art!

Guests were treated to a fun video presentation that included a photo array of Guild events, quilts and workshops .  Members also shared snippets of their personal work spaces.  Sharing this was meant to inspire and encourage all members; and from the conversations that were taking place it sure hit the mark.

There were lots of prizes and some very happy winners.

Dinner was wonderful with a huge selection of hot and cold salads; and the dessert table was a masterpiece.

The Gilbert Plains Quilters left us each with a valuable ticket for next years windup event!

Meeting Reminder

Tomorrow is our last meeting before our summer break.  Due to lack of commitment, we will not be having our daytime UFO tomorrow.  Meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Old Fire Hall.  Bring your show and tell!  Don't forget to bring your mystery quilt tops or blocks so we can see them and compare. I promised a gift to those who have their blocks or tops complete - I am working on that right now.  I hope I get to give away many!

See you tomorrow!
