Rock Island Campfires

Here is a little bit of surprise show and tell from Pat.  She is giving this quilt away this weekend so we won't get to see it in person (boo!), but a photo is better than nothing at all!  This is the first one she had machine quilted.  The pattern is from the 2200 series of Fons and Porter and is called Rock Island Campfires.  I love Pat's color palette!

November 6 Meeting/Sewing Day/Show & Tell

We had a really great day on Thursday with a good group sewing through the day.  There were a lot of the placemats finished and you can see some of the spread below.  By the end of the meeting (when people who had taken some home from the workshop in Ochre River returned finished placemats) we had a total of 81!! YEAH everyone we have reached our goal and now have enough for the Meals On Wheels Program both from the hospital program and the Seniors Program.

Many thanks to Joy Hillhouse for making the labels for all the placemats.  There were wonderful and added the finishing touch.

We also had a fabulous Show & Tell at the meeting with Dawn Piasta showing her wonderful 10 minute block blue and yellow (gotta love that combination) quilt.  The picture does not do it justice.   

 Dawn then showed her own creation from photos enlarged and then using the outline to create a quilt for obviously a hunter (I believe it is for her son).  Absolutely stunning work and sure to be loved!

 We then had Cheri Bourns showing off her quilt that as she said "kept growing" because she added another row around and then it was really big.

 I really love the strip in the back made of blocks left over from the front.  Really accents the and coordinates the back to the front.

 Karen Pryce then showed her pumpkin wall-hanging perfect for the wonderful fall we have had.

 And her runner.  She says there is a mistake but for the life of us we could not figure out where!  Why do we as quilters feel we need to tell people this?  Even as quilters we could not figure out what the "mistake" was and it should really be called a design choice instead!

We then had Amy Lone show an amazing KISS quilt made for a really lucky guy.  He didn't wear the T-shirts anymore and they were put to spectacular use and made into this fabulous creation of love backed by super soft cuddle up fabric.  I believe it was quilted by Lori Suss.  

 We then had a double treat of Bev Prestayko and Pat Milburn showing off the finished wall-hangings from a previous workshop I believe that was taught by Dawn.

All in all we had a great meeting, great show & tell, and great sewing day.  The next workshop will be on January 17, 2015 with Dawn teaching the denim wall-hanging.  This was a preregister class so hope you registered in time.  

November Meeting this Week

Just a friendly reminder that our November meeting will be happening this Thursday November 6th!

If you are free during the day Karen and Bev will be at the Old Fire Hall from 9:30 on.  There is lots of work to be doing on our place mats for Meals on Wheels.  If you can't spend all day, any time you can spare would be greatly appreciated!  Working with others is a great time to pick up hints or learn a new skill.  Curious about how to do something - ask away!

Our regular meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.  I believe there will be a new comfort quilt block handed out.

Don't forget to bring your show and tell!  I hope someone takes lots of pictures as I have to miss the meeting but don't want to miss out on all the eye candy!

Band Raffle Donation Quilt

Many hands do make light work!

Thank you to our the guild members who made blocks for our DRCSS Band Fundraising quilt!  We had 93 blocks come in from guild members.  Reneta, Cheri and Sandra came over to my house to piece the top together.  It is a generous twin/small double at 74" x 88".  I quilted it with a nice allover design. (You can see more pictures on my blog.)  It is currently in Gloria's hands for binding and a label.  We will be able to present it to Mr. Schimdt and Mr. Coombs after our November meeting.

Place Mat Work Day

We had about a dozen ladies out for our work bee for Christmas place mats for Meals on Wheels.  Our initial goal was to make about 60.  It came to the attention of some of our members that the Seniors Center also delivers meals to about 15 people so a new goal was set of 75 place mats!

 

 Through the creativity of the ladies in attendance and the generous fabric donation we received last year I am thrilled to say that we indeed will have 75 place mats to donate if not more.  They are currently in various stages of completion, so if you were unable to attend yesterday and want to lend a hand it is not too late.

We decided to pillowcase turn the majority of the place mats.  Some are turned and just need a little quilting.  Some need turning and quilting.  There will also be some that require traditional binding. Labels will also need to be added.  Karen P and Bev P were heading up this project so if you can assist please let them know.




The was a lot of fun and a lot of learning happening throughout the day.  I even donned the gloves and did a little free motion quilting on my domestic machine - turns out it is like riding a bike, I could still do it!

 I thought I'd share to give you an example of something that could be made for our mug rug exchange.

October Show and Tell

The Crocus Quilt held held on monthly meeting on Thursday October 2nd to a great group of over 30 ladies.

Member returned their Night and Day brick blocks and I am happy to report that there were 93! This will allow us to make a generous twin sized quilt for the Band Program.  Thank you to all who participated - many hand do indeed make light work! 

Another very exciting part of the meeting was the reveal of the challenge kits for 2015.  Bev P. has challenged us to use a least 2 shapes in our projects and include these fabrics.  Remember that this year there is a maximum perimeter size of 100" to facilitate the quilts being easily hung at the library.  I believe there are still kits available for members at a cost of $10.

It was decided that we will be having 2 exchanges at our Christmas meeting on December 4th.  One is a fat quarter exchange - please place in a brown paper bag with no decorations.  The other is a mug rug exchange.  Participation in these exchanges is optional but encouraged.  If you bring one, you will leave with one.

And here was the lovely show and tell.  Gloria finished this amazing wall hanging that was started at a workshop.  There is an incredible amount of paper piecing involved and it turned out just great.  Sorry I can't remember the name of the pattern just now.

Sherry's quilt that she referred to as Ugly#1 (because she says she has enough fabric left to make Ugly #2).   I don't think it is ugly at all, and there were a few in the crowd who remembered some of the prints as well.  We just need to point out all the "vintage" fabrics that were used and it value will sky rocket!  It really was a great way to use up some fabric that may not be to your taste any longer.

Here is a close up of the quilting technique that Sherry is able to do with her walking foot.  I love the effect.

Karen shared this lovely tree-guest book-wall hanging from the 3rd of three of her children's weddings this summer.  Guests signed their names on the leaves.  The picture just doesn't do this one justice.  Very creative and I'm sure it will be treasured for many years to come.

This quilt is Amy's and once again I can't remember the name of the pattern.  I love how the white sashing calms to whole quilt down.

This is Cheri's table centre from the workshop we offered last fall. (I wish mine were that far along - it is still in the many sample stages.)  I am going to have to get Cheri to teach me that cool top stitching technique she used around the outer edge.  It looks like hand stitching, but is done by machine.
